Adding and Editing a Person

Learn how to add a person to a matter, choose their roles and relationship, and edit their details, including on Estate Planning couples' matters.

People are central to every estate matter. Each person added to a matter is linked to a Clio contact and can be assigned one or more roles that define their relationship to the estate or plan.

➕ How to Add a New Person

  1. Open the matter, click Estate overview in the left panel, and scroll to the People section.

  2. Click Add Person.

  3. Select an option:

    • Use Existing Clio Contact to search for and select a contact from your Clio account.

    • Create New Contact to enter a new person.

  4. Under Person Role(s), choose one or more roles. The roles vary by matter type and some labels follow the matter's state. Hover over the info icon next to a role to see what it means.

  5. On Estate Planning matters, choose the person's Relationship to Client, such as Child, Sibling, Friend or Charity.

  6. Fill in the name, contact details and any other relevant fields.

  7. Click Save to add the person to the matter.

💑 Estate Planning Matters With Two Clients

When an Estate Planning matter has two clients, such as a married couple, the person form asks some extra questions:

  • Whose relative? When you choose a family relationship, a question such as Whose child? appears. Select either client's name, or Both.

  • For whom? When you tick a role that belongs to one client, such as Personal Representative - Executor or Beneficiary, choose which client it applies to, or Both. The People table then shows this next to the role, for example "Beneficiary (of both)".

  • Once the matter has two clients, the Client role is greyed out with the message "An estate planning matter can have at most two clients."

Roles are optional for family members on Estate Planning matters, so you can record a client's relatives before deciding on their roles. See Estate Planning Matters in EstateMin.

✏️ How to Edit a Person

  1. Open the matter, click Estate overview in the left panel, and scroll to the People section.

  2. Click the person you want to edit.

  3. Update their details as needed.

  4. Click Save to apply your changes.

💡 Good to Know

  • On Estate Planning matters created before 20 October 2026, existing people may show "(of: Not set)" or "(for: Not set)" next to a role. Open the person and choose which client the role applies to.

  • The old Guardian role has been replaced by Guardian for Minor Children and Guardian for an Adult. People who already held it keep it until you change their role. See Overview of All People Roles.
