Clients can attach files to individual estate items in the Client Portal, such as receipts, valuations, and statements against an asset, debt, or expense. They can also send your firm documents you have requested on the Estate Files step. This article explains what your client sees, so you can guide them through it.
📎 How your client attaches a file to an estate item
The client opens the Client Portal and goes to the step and item they want to add a file to. This can be an Asset, Debt, or Expense.
They click Add to create a new item, or open an existing item to edit it.
They complete the item details.
At the bottom of the form, they click Attach File.
They select the file from their computer, or from phone storage if they are on mobile. Each file can be up to 25 MB.
They click Save to save the item with the attached file.
🗑️ How your client removes a file from an estate item
The client opens the item containing the file.
They click the delete icon beside the file.
They click Save to confirm.
📁 How your client uploads a file you have requested
When you turn on Request upload on a key file, the document appears on the client's Estate Files step marked Upload requested. Anything you write in Client instructions (optional) is shown to them at the top of the row.
The client opens the Client Portal and goes to the Estate Files step.
They select the row for the document you have asked for.
Under Requested from you, they click Attach File.
They select the file, up to 25 MB.
They click Save.
The row then shows Uploaded by me and your firm is notified. The client can still remove the file until you accept it. Once you accept it with Add to Estate Files, only your firm can remove it.
Documents you share with the client appear on these same rows. Clients can open and download them but cannot remove them. For what the client sees, see How to View Files Your Attorney Has Shared With You.
🔒 When your client can no longer change a file
Once your firm has added an item to the Estate Overview, the client can no longer add or remove files on that item. They will need to contact your firm to make changes.
Until your firm adds the item to the estate, the client can add and remove files freely.
💡 Good to Know
The maximum size for any single file is 25 MB.
Clients can attach more than one file to the same document type.
A file a client uploads on the Estate Files step does not reach Clio until your firm accepts it. See Reviewing Client-Submitted Files, People, Assets, Debts, and Expenses.
Clients need to be invited and signed in to the portal before they can upload anything.
