How to Change a Client's Portal Sign-In Email

Learn how to change the email your client uses to sign in to their Client Portal, and why editing the contact in Clio does not change it.

If your client needs to sign in to their Client Portal with a different email address, you can change their portal sign-in email from their page under Client portals in the matter's left panel. Everything they have already done in the portal is kept.

Changing the contact's email from the people table or in Clio does not change the portal sign-in email.

Once a client has been invited, use Change portal email as described below.

🔐 Before You Begin

Change portal email is only available once the client has been invited to their Client Portal.

  • Client not invited yet: update the email on the person in the People table, then send the invite. The invitation goes to the email saved on the person. See How to Invite Your Client to their Client Portal.

  • Client already invited: follow the steps below.

✉️ How to Change a Client's Portal Sign-In Email

  1. Open the matter in EstateMin.

  2. In the left panel, click Client portals, then select the client's name.

  3. Next to Portal sign-in email at the top of the page, click Change portal email.

  4. In the Change portal sign-in email window, check the Current email shown.

  5. Enter the new address in New portal sign-in email.

  6. Click Change email and send invite.

To close the window without making a change, click Cancel.

🔄 What Happens Next

  • The old email stops working immediately and your client is signed out of the portal.

  • EstateMin sends an invitation to the new address. Your client signs in with the new email using a magic link, as usual.

  • Your client's existing work in the portal is kept.

💡 Good to Know

  • This changes the portal sign-in email only. It does not update the contact's email on the people table or in Clio. If you want the two to match, update the contact from the people table or in Clio separately.

  • Updating the contact's email in Clio does not change the email your client uses to sign in to the portal.
