If your attorney is helping you plan your estate, the Family and Loved Ones step of your Client Portal is where you tell them about your family and anyone else you would like to provide for. Your attorney reviews everything you add or change before it is used.
The Family and Loved Ones step is used on estate planning portals. If your attorney is handling the estate of someone who has died, your portal has a People of the Estate step instead. See How to Add People to the Estate in the Client Portal.
📂 Where to Find It
Sign in to your Client Portal.
On the portal home page, click Start next to Family and Loved Ones.
The step has four sections: Your Details, Family members, Anyone else you'd like to provide for? and Already on file.
🙋 Your Details
Your Details lists you, and your spouse or partner if they are also a client on the matter, with the label To be reviewed. Check that your details are correct.
👨👩👧 How to Add a Family Member
Add your family whether or not they will have a role in your plan.
Under Family members, click Add a family member.
Choose how the person is related to you from How are they related to you?, for example Child, Grandchild or Sibling.
If you and your spouse or partner are both clients, choose whose relative they are, for example under Whose child?, select your name, your spouse's name, or Both.
Enter their name, date of birth and contact details, and answer the questions about them:
Under 18?
Do they have a disability or special needs?
As an adult, might they need help making personal decisions?
Under Roles (optional), tick any role you already have in mind for them. You can leave this for now and choose who acts for you later in the Decision-Makers step.
Click Save. The message Added. Your attorney will review it. appears and the person is listed under Family members as Submitted.
🤝 How to Add Someone Else
Use Anyone else you'd like to provide for? for friends, charities, professional or trust companies, and anyone else you would like to leave something to.
Click Add someone else.
Enter their details and click Save.
They are listed with Who they are and their status.
📋 How to Update Someone Already on File
Already on file lists people your attorney has added or accepted. Please don't add these people again.
Select the person you want to update.
Change their details and click Save. The message Saved. Your attorney will review the change. appears.
The person is listed under Family members as Pending Review until your attorney accepts the change.
🏷️ What the Statuses Mean
Submitted: you added this person and your attorney has not reviewed them yet.
Pending Review: you changed the details of someone already on file and your attorney has not reviewed the change yet.
Added: your attorney has accepted the person you added.
Updated: your attorney has accepted your change.
✅ How to Complete the Step
When you have added everyone, click Complete Step at the bottom of the page.
Click Yes, complete to confirm. This lets your attorney know you have finished the section.
You return to the portal home page, where the step shows a green check.
You can still add or change people after completing the step.
💡 Good to Know
If you're unsure about any details, add what you know. Your attorney will review it and help fill any gaps.
If you and your spouse or partner are both clients, people either of you add appear for both of you.
To note who you have in mind for each role, such as your executor or a guardian for your children, use the Decision-Makers step. See How to Add Your Decision Makers in the Client Portal.
