How to Add People to the Estate in the Client Portal

Learn how to check your own details, add people connected to the estate, and see who your attorney already has on file.

If your attorney is handling the estate of someone who has died, the People of the Estate step of your Client Portal is where you check your own details and tell your attorney about other people connected to the estate, such as heirs, beneficiaries and family members. Your attorney reviews everything you add before it is used.

Where to Find It

  1. Sign in to your Client Portal.

  2. On the portal home page, click Start next to People of the Estate.

The step has three sections: Your Details, People added by you and Current Estate.

Your Details

Your Details lists you and your role on the estate, such as Personal Representative - Executor.

  1. Click your name. The Edit Person form opens.

  2. Check your details and update anything that is missing or wrong.

  3. Click Save, or click Cancel to go back without saving.

Your attorney reviews any change before it is used.

How to Add a Person

  1. Under People added by you, click Add Person.

  2. Under Person Role(s), tick each role that applies to the person, such as Beneficiary or Heir. A person can have more than one role. The info icon next to each role explains what it means.

  3. Under Contact Type, choose Individual or Company.

  4. Enter the person's First Name and Last Name. A role, first name and last name are required. Add any other details you know, such as their address, phone number, email address and date of birth.

  5. Choose how the person was related to the person who died from Relationship to Decedent, for example Child, Sibling, Niece or Nephew.

  6. Answer the questions for the roles you chose. The questions depend on the role. For example, Beneficiary Fields asks Alive or Deceased?, Is this person a minor? and Does this person have a disability?

  7. Click Save. The person is listed under People added by you with their status.

If you click Cancel before saving, a Discard unsaved changes? window opens. Click Keep editing to go back to the form. Clicking Discard changes deletes what you entered for this person.

People Already on File

Current Estate lists the people currently on file for the estate, with their role and relationship. This includes people your attorney has added and people you added that your attorney has approved. Please don't add these people again.

This list is view only. If something in it looks wrong, or you are not sure whether someone should be listed, contact your attorney directly. Your attorney decides who needs to be included and in what role. To update your own details, use the Your Details section.

What the Statuses Mean

  • Submitted: you added this person and your attorney has not reviewed them yet.

  • Pending Review: you changed details that were already on file and your attorney has not reviewed the change yet.

  • Added: your attorney has accepted the person you added.

  • Updated: your attorney has accepted your change.

How to Complete the Step

  1. When you have added everyone you know of, click Complete Step at the bottom of the page.

  2. Click Yes, complete to confirm. This lets your attorney know you have finished the section.

  3. You return to the portal home page, where the step shows a green checkmark.

You can still add people after completing the step. See Marking a Step as Complete.
